Coalitions

The Healthy Minds Study (HMS) provides excellent opportunities for individual institutions to better understand the state of mental health on campus. Participating as a Coalition of schools can extend those benefits even further.

What is a Coalition?
A Coalition is a group of five (5) or more institutions that participate together for a more efficient and valuable HMS experience. Coalitions can be formed around any common thread, such as:

  • Geographic region (i.e. State, Metropolitan Areas, Interstate Region)
  • Aspirational Peer/Benchmark Groups
  • Professional Membership
  • School Type (i.e. Community Colleges, Military Colleges, etc.)
  • State Systems

Why form a Coalition?
Enrolling Coalitions is more efficient for the HMS than enrolling individual schools. We pass those savings along to Coalitions in the form of added discounts, services, flexibility, and data-sharing opportunities. Some common Coalition benefits that may apply include:

  • Discounts for bulk payment (if payment are made for multiple schools at once, a bulk payment discount may apply)
    • 5% discount for 5 or more schools
    • 10% discount for 20 or more schools
  • Invoicing flexibility – at the request of a Coalition, we may spread out the costs of participation in several ways (to allow multiple funding sources to contribute)
  • Coalition-wide custom questions (10)
  • Aggregate sample – allowing larger schools within your Coalition to survey more students when your smaller schools do not use their full 4,000 sample allotment
  • With 10 or more schools in a Coalition, additional services may also include:
    • A customized PowerPoint® report summarizing the Coalition results across key measures
    • Coalition-wide seminars to assist schools in getting started, building momentum, and interpreting/using their data

How do I form a Coalition?
Anyone may form a Coalition. We recognize that each group of schools has different needs and priorities, and will help you customize your Coalition experience to make sure you get the most out of participation. Please contact the HMS Coalition Director to discuss your unique situation.

While HMS will assist you in the recruitment of Coalition members, the responsibility of confirming and committing a group of schools as a Coalition will be up to members of the Coalition itself.

Coalition Success Story
Eight schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia formed an HMS Coalition in HMS 2009. Learn how HMS helped these schools meet their goal of developing comprehensive plans for suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.
